Having produced over 75 recreations of old time radio programs, several broadcast live... I have found that working with the manual sound effects used in "old time radio" has been a fascinating and fun hobby. Many of the items that I use to create sound effects are modeled after what I have seen and read about in the literature. In the photo is yours truly with my "Wind Machine" - rotating the wooden drum with slats while have a piece of red canvas on top of the drum, gives the sound of the wind whistling ... the faster you crank... the higher the pitch and the more intense the storm! But sound effects (SFX) were also created by vocal artists imitating animal and other sounds... this is Part 1 of two parts giving a little history and some controversy about the art of making sound effects.
