The story was originally produced in 1937 and again produced on April 23, 1945 with a new cast. The Petrified Forest is adapted from a hit Broadway play by Robert Sherwood. Duke Mantee (Lawrence Tierney) and his gang have just committed an armed robbery on a bank in Arizona and meantime Alan Squire a writer played by Ronald Coleman has just hitched a lift and finds himself in a filling station café where disillusioned Gabby Maple (Susan Heyward) works as a waitress. Squire and Gabby strike up a conversation about poetry and her longing to go to France unaware that Mantee and his gangsters are approaching.
