At the end of July 2019, I was commissioned to make a track to celebrate the Lovelock Centenary conference held at the University of Exeter. The conference brought together some of the top climate scientists and academics from around the world on the occasion of James Lovelock’s 100th birthday. (He was the ‘inventor’ of the Gaia Hypothesis. And, yes, he was there and gave a fascinating talk).
To make the piece I recorded the speeches and atmosphere of the event and then blended these found sounds with music to make something which I hoped would capture the essence of the event. I also dragged along Patrick Dunn to make a video from the visual elements of the conference. It was an unusual and fascinating experience and everyone seemed really pleased with the results, and we are very happy to share them with you too.
