"HeadPhony" was written and produced for a film project I'm a part of. This track utilizes some of my favorite types of guitar riffing, which is the use of semi-tones to create what I call off-set notes. Players like Van Halen, Vai, and Satriani use these all the time, but I like to go deep with them and create moving main theme guitar hooks. What I mean by moving, is this song's main guitar riff is all over the fret-board, beginning at the 2nd fret and ending at the 10th. The song's bridge is a more traditional Rock groove with a nice wide stereo spread.
The solo is over a unique chord pattern to the song. The solo moves to the key of "F" where as the main song is in "A". The rhythm under the solo while still hard rock is also quite jazzy in the way it progresses, which allows me to change some modes up and play with the key a bit, which is both what the filmmaker who requested this tracks wanted, and what I really enjoy doing during solos.
F.Y.I. the song's title comes from my old standby Sennheiser headphones quitting on me after 10 years of use. This song was recorded and mixed using the only other set of headphones I had handy which were a set of "X-Men" headphones!! Yes, I know, "X-Men", while a big deal in the superhero world, are not so much so in the headphone industry. That being said the title "HeadPhony" is used sarcastically of course. No worries, a new pair of headphone awesomeness is on the way, then the "X-Men" and their bad frequency range and I can part ways for another decade.
