"Shred Zeppelin 2017" is a total re-recording from the ground up of one of my most popular tracks of all time "Shred Zeppelin". The original 2013 version (still online of course at https://soundcloud.com/jeff-fiorentino-jfrocks/shred-zeppelin-guitarist-jeff-fiorentino-tv-film-music-hollywood-led ) was done in February of 2013.
I've always wanted to re-do this song and give an almost live performance version. Which is what this 2017 version does well. Usually when you play live you embellish on your own material a bit. Nobody wants to go to a show and hear a cookie cutter version from the CD. That said, if I / we were going to do "Shred Zeppelin" live, this 2017 version is probably about how it would go.
There are some changes from the original version. This 2017 version has been slowed from the 100 bpm of the original to 94 bpm, which I think gives it better feel than the original had. The drums have been enhanced far beyond the original version's. Better sound, and 4 years have passed, I'm a much better drummer these days than I was back then. I'm also using a 1/2 step flat guitar tuning for this version, where as the original version is a standard guitar tuning.
Beyond all of that, I've also changed the arrangement and created a fresh new solo as well that takes notes from early Jimmy Page solos. The guitar sound and settings are basically the same as the original. I use a Les Paul and Marshall JCM 800 throughout. However the EQ was given a bit more mid-range to help it sound a little closer to what you need to do live to cut through.
Overall I think both versions are great, but this one is really spectacular. The original version has over 250K plays to date. I'd like to see this one do even better, and I certainly think it can and deserves to be cranked up.
I hope fans of the original version enjoy this new version. Be sure as always to CRANK IT UP!!! This was done with a wide stereo mix, so a good set of headphones is ideal for sure..
