Hi folks, glad you could join us today! ✨
Summer is officially behind us and the temperatures are perfect for getting cozy. 🍂 So today, we’re slowing things down a bit and taking you on a beautiful, energetic downtempo journey around the 100 BPM mark. 🎶 We have a very special guest from London: the wonderful Katie aka @kaybeeats – passionate dancer 💃, DJ 🎧, and the driving force behind the Sanctuary Sessions (more about that in the interview). Her favourite tempo range is between 90 and 115 BPM, with a clear focus on intuition, flow, and connecting with the audience. 🌊💫
🧘♀️Welcome Katie, how did you get in touch with electronic music and when did you start DJing?
I grew up as a dancer in Australia from the age of 5, which shaped my early musical sensibilities. Later, I got drawn into downtempo electronic music, initially inspired by Turkish producer Zigan Aldi. I dove deep into eclectic electronic music, curating playlists for different vibes. After moving to London in 2019, I embedded myself in the underground scene, and by 2021 I began DJing. For me, it’s a therapeutic practice of self-expression, creative freedom, and healing.
🧘♀️What should your music stand for?
Music, for me, represents creative freedom and emotional truth. It’s a space for self-expression, healing, and connection. The most powerful moments happen when it unlocks something within the listener, creating an unspoken connection that transcends borders.
🧘♀️How do you plan a set for a podcast?
It depends. Sometimes I record spontaneously at home to capture a moment, and other times I curate a playlist for a specific audience or venue. I usually plan the first two tracks, then follow intuition and let the energy guide the set. Playing with my partner as Flawd by kayḆe, it’s about surrendering control and flowing together. The approach changes with the setting, but staying present is always key.
🧘♀️Tell us about the Sanctuary Sessions.
Sanctuary Sessions began with my twin sister and me in London. We wanted to bring the deeper, more eclectic side of electronic music to life there, creating intimacy, and community beyond the typical club scene. We showcase niche and emerging artists, as opposed to booking 'headliners', advocating for creative freedom. Each event is aesthetically and sonically unique, blending bespoke visuals and decor with one musical journey that flows together seamlessly throughout each set. Sanctuary is now run with my sister, best friend Tim, and my partner Andreas. Meanwhile I'm also working with artists on international touring and management, whilst collaborating with venues and promoters on music programming. Next year, we’ll be based between Berlin and Amsterdam, producing events across both cities, with the long term goal of creating a permanent Sanctuary space.
🧘♀️What are your next steps in electronic music?
I’m spending some time in Thailand before relocating to Berlin next year. I’ll continue growing Sanctuary, producing more events, and collaborating with like-minded collectives. Production is on the horizon, but I want the right space and clarity to dive in properly. DJing remains a personal, expressive, and meditative practice—I’d rather play the right moments for the right communities than chase gigs.
🧘♀️What would be your biggest dream when it comes to electronic music?
The long term vision is to let Sanctuary evolve organically, guided by the energy and people it attracts. We want to keep growing the collective and partner with like minded boutique festivals to build our own Sanctuary stage and curate our own programming. Ultimately, the dream is to create a permanent physical Sanctuary a space dedicated to music, movement, and visual art. A cosy, community driven listening lounge and creative hub where global artists can connect, collaborate, and share their work.
Thanks Katie and all the best for you ✨🌿
