This song is my personal tribute to Tulum, and I hope that it can be a call to awareness for the many issues now facing this beloved town in Mexico.
Late one night several years ago I stumbled upon this amazing home made presentation on Youtube from 2007, about the problems that were starting to arrive in Tulum. The presenters knew back then, that Tulum was going to have issues, because the same thing had already happened, first in Cancun, then in Playa del Carmen. They knew over crowding, pollution, lack of resources, exploitation of locals, corruption, and more, was all headed to Tulum. At the end of the video, they present a song which was written by a local woman, about the issues facing Tulum. It sounds like a group of friends drunk on their porch having fun and just making things up as they go along. Its raw and honest, and sounds like it was recorded on a cell phone. I knew instantly I wanted to sample this to amplify the voices of the native people of Tulum, and help them somehow.
My hope with this song is raise awareness to the problems of Tulum in a fun casual way. If I can get people singing along to this, maybe, just maybe, they’ll start subconsciously getting the picture, and change their actions.
