A mysterious new project has emerged from Japan under the name 50+28, with the group’s first transmission, “夜を越えて,” premiering here. Translated as “Beyond The Night,” the song shimmers around a repeated vocal refrain, which becomes more and more alluring as it’s paired with minimal percussion, droning cello and additional layers of voices singing the line - “beyond the dark night, to the direction of sunrise” - in unison. There’s very little that happens here, but in the best way possible, building undeniable atmosphere from just the barest of rhythmic elements and an unadorned female voice. There’s not much information available yet as to who or what 50+28 is, exactly, but “Beyond The Night” is a promising debut.
