An alumna of the 2011 Red Bull Music Academy in Madrid, Maya Medvesek AKA Nightwave has kept busy in the years since, running her own Nightrave party series in Glasgow and launching the Heka Trax imprint with her “Luxor” EP plus additional releases from Big Dope P and Blastto. The latest Heka Trax release is by Glaswegian R&B duo Bossy Love, out on Friday, March 11, and their “Bossy Love” single is another example of Nightwave’s keen A+R ear, while her remix, premiered here, showcases her significant and consistent production skills.
The original “Bossy Love” is a finger-snapping slow jam featuring a luscious vocal turn from vocalist Amandah Wilkinson over John Baillie Jr.’s stuttering pop production, but Nightwave extracts the dominant lyrical boast - “Ain’t nobody better than me” - and flips it into an insistent hook. Burbling synths circle the vocal until you’re completely convinced of its truth, and additional rhythmic filigrees lift it further into dance floor bliss before an affecting piano outro. Amandah’s assertion that “We’re making gold, son” certainly applies to Nightwave’s work here.
