Sonically intimidating but lyrically vulnerable, “Come” is a welcome collaboration from Catnapp and AAAA, two producers with otherwise distinct emotional vocabularies. Catnapp, an Argentinian singer-songwriter-dreamer, has a sweet voice that skips lightly on top of heavy percussion and luminescent melodies, while AAAA, a 2016 Red Bull Music Academy Montreal participant out of Mexico City, explores all manner of propulsive noise and distortion in his techno-leaning productions.
“Come” is a meeting of their minds, recorded at this year’s RBMA Bass Camp in Santiago de Chile. You can hear both producers’ touch on the rolling beat, with ambient field recordings, distorted background vocals and squawking bass surrounding bite-size, sweet ’n’ sour lyrical clouds. AAAA tamps down his typical aggression in favor of quivering detail, until bass pressure pushing upwards gently bursts the bubble surrounding Catnapp’s voice.
