A collaborative release curated and produced by Celestial Trax and Orlando Volcano for Volcano's Escape From Nature imprint, Thru Our Eyes Pt. 1 shines a light on some of the duo’s favorite New York rappers. The first in a planned series, the contributors are pulled from NYC’s queer and ballroom scenes - Jay Boogie, Quay Dash, Rozay Labeija (formerly Roosevelt) and Dai Burger, whose forceful appearance on “Current Events” is debuted here.
Burger - who put out the Dai 1 EP via Rinse at the end of 2015 – swerves impressively around Volcano and Celestial Trax’s production, which is at once gaudy and reserved, with as much emphasis on empty space as there is on smoky percussion. In the quiet moments, Burger steps back vocally, willing and able to change gears, but her intensity somehow stays audible even in the silence. She positions herself as a sort of guilty pleasure, someone so magnetic that her followers can’t help wanting to keep track of everything she’s up to, just like “current events.” Based on this track alone, though, there’s plenty to want to keep following. Of course, you’ll need a soundsystem for the murky and gleefully profane claims to make their true impact known.
