With a template ranging from hip hop-centric club browbeaters to eccentric electronica exercises, Japan's @emufucka caught our ears during the selection process for last year's Red Bull Music Academy. We invited the beatsmith to New York and he ended up among a strong cast of 60 other international producers in our workshop program, and playing an unforgettable Do-Over set right by the Brooklyn Bridge.
The ambitious 3-part EP Melchior, Balthasar, Casper sees Emufucka explore familiar territories - but arguably with more thump than ever before. "Planet," placed fittingly at the collection's tail-end, is the somewhat odd one out. Its sparkling synths create a spherically soothing atmosphere, invoking an intergalactic ride at walking speed. Densely structured, yet airily lightweight, "Planet" puts gravity on hold for a duration of four minutes.
Emufucka will be playing the RBMA SonarDôme stage at @sonarfestival 2014.
