Emufucka is Japanese producer Takafumi Sakurai, a 2013 Red Bull Music Academy alumnus and a productive presence on the worldwide beats scene. With prior releases on Dutch labels Black Hole Recordings and Fremdtunes, Emufucka’s name reflects the playfulness on display in the stylistic mashups of his music, a mischievous amalgamation of the digital and analog that is on display in his latest luminescent release “Garnet.”
A collaboration with German producer Rottheo, who shares his penchant for hyperactive sounds, “Garnet” showcases Emufucka’s playful programming and weightless beats. It’s over eight minutes long but feels half that, with pads calming the rhythmic lurch and two orchestral breakdowns, the second as welcoming as the first. Digital trills and squiggles corkscrew around the main beat, but you stay focused on the joyful, sticky melody throughout.
