Description

Tollcrane AKA Talha Asim Wynne makes music that’s as comforting as it is unclassifiable, weaving his influences from jazz and electronic heroes like John Coltrane and Actress into more linear forms. In addition to his production work as Tollcrane, the Pakistani musician and 2014 RBMA Tokyo grad is the former guitarist of the psych-rock outfit //orangenoise and current member of Forever South, an electronic music collective in Karachi that connects his dance and indie interests. Now classifying his work as “experimental techno,” on March 29th Tollcrane will release the ‘Trips Alone’ mini-LP on Hear Now Records (run by fellow RBMA alumnus Ziyad Habib AKA noahs heark), with lead single “Graveyard Shift” streaming now via RBMA.

On “Graveyard Shift,” vocal synths quiver momentarily over lumbering accents before the kick drum takes over. It contains the sort of melody Tollcrane is adept at: pliable and restless, with plenty of bleary details competing for attention within the haze. A restless arpeggio chugs casually towards a peak, while the entire mood has a soothing feel - there’s something pillowy about the elements Tollcrane includes that soften the propulsion without letting the energy dissipate or the track deflate. It’s simple, yes, but simply mesmerizing nonetheless.

‘Trips Alone’ is available as free digital download and limited-run cassette via the Hear Now Records Bandcamp on March 29th:
