Description

What is inequality? Why does it matter? If we oppose inequality, what is it that we should be trying to eliminate? Is equal opportunity or meritocracy the right model of equality? Or should we aim for something else?
In this lecture delivered for the University of Louisville Social Change program in 2019, I discuss how philosophers think about equality and inequality, with an overview of three principal theories: equality of opportunity (or meritocracy), democratic equality, and capability egalitarianism.
