How do we live together, impinging on one another's space, blocking each others' view, filling each other's ears and nostrils, jostling, crowding? How do we do all this so peaceably and pleasantly, so often, and so rarely even get angry about it? Yet what happens when someone wants an exemption from this kind of close-quarters interaction -- they want not to see how you dress, or hear how you sound?
Ethics Forward speaks to Jacob T. Levy, Tomlinson Professor of Political Theory at McGill University in Montreal, about the idea of "Multicultural Manners" and how the "manners" and "mores" of the city can guide us through these crowded spaces. We also briefly discuss his work for the Niskanen Center's Open Society project.
