Elite colleges pride themselves on their diversity efforts and even on admitting poor and working-class students tuition-free. Yet these exclusive colleges continue to be populated by student bodies that are predominantly white and wealthy. Why are the diversity efforts of these colleges failing to chip away at white privilege, on campus or among alumni? Could these colleges' approach to diversity be making matters worse, reproducing inequality rather than reducing it? How should institutions and individuals rethink their approach to diversity, in order to avoid exacerbating inequality? Prof. W. Carson Byrd, author of POISON IN THE IVY, discusses his findings and what they mean for individual and institutional responsibility, and to race relations, on campus and off.
