Richard Hannay is a Canadian visitor to London. While attending a show at a local music hall he meets Annabella "Smith", who, he learns, is being hunted by secret agents who want to kill her.
Hannay agrees to help her and begins by hiding her in his flat When she is murdered during the night, he knows he will be accused of the murder.
Hannay realizes he must go on the run to save himself and uncover the spy ring trying to steal top secret British military information.
