Description

The U.S. House of Representatives considered H.R.1074, "To repeal the Act entitled "An Act to confer jurisdiction on the State of Iowa over offenses committed by or against Indians on the Sac and Fox Indian Reservation" on November 1, 2017.

The bill repeals a termination-era law that authorized the state of Iowa to prosecute citizens of the Meskwaki Nation for crimes that occur on their settlement. Typically, states do not exercise jurisdiction in Indian Country.

The bill passed by a voice vote under a suspension of the rules.

“Today marks a major step forward in our effort to restore a piece of our sovereignty and provide better law enforcement services on our settlement," Chairman Alvin Wildcat said.
