President Donald Trump signs S.5, the Laken Riley Act, into law on January 29, 2025.
The law mandates the detention of non-citizens who have been charged with theft, burglary, larceny, shoplifting, assaulting a law enforcement officer or other crimes that cause serious bodily injury or result in death.
The Laken Riley Act is named after a nursing student in Georgia who was killed by a non-citizen who had been cited for shoplifting in the state of Georgia and arrested for child endangerment in New York.
S.5 is the first bill signed into law by Trump since he took offie as the 47th president of the United States on January 20, 2025.
