Judge Abby Abinanti of the Yurok Nation became the first female Native American lawyer in California and the first Native American to serve as a judicial officer for the state of California. In 1997, Judge Abby began serving as a judge for the Yurok Nation and since 2007 has been the Yurok Tribal Court’s chief judge. Judge Abby has established an innovative wellness court that focuses on restorative justice and healing.
