In October of 1991 I had just upgraded my home studio, the RAGE CAGE, finally getting a proper sampler and some other key gear, including the SP-12 (5 seconds of sampling time), Tascam 688 8-Track Cassette Records, Quadraverb, etc...
Not too long after I connected with a new local group who wanted to come by and record a song, and that was how I first worked with Showboat and Slo Mo of Black Toast. In fact, the first session, only Showboat game, I didn't met Slo Mo until the second session.
In any event, those first couple of sessions we created a song called "Scandalous", which was sort of their theme song, as they were a part of the Scandalous Posse. For the original beat, I beat-jacked some Special Ed drums, flipped some R&B Samples, including a Prince vocal sample. BUT, I hadn't quite learned how to use the equipment so the beat is a beat of a mess, and the effects are going a bit rampant with the Quardraverb.
But Showboat and Slo Mo were definitely the stars of the song, and they instantly became one of my favorite groups to work with. Unfortunately, we only did a couple more sessions, but they were a great group, who I thought had a great chance at getting a record deal.
I've been wanting to remix this song forever but never got around to it. However, with Slo Mo passing away semi-recently, it's been on mind more than ever, so I when I was working on a mixtape called "Circa '91", with my favorites from that year, I knew it was time!
I made this beat in July of 2025 using samples sources and records that I had in my collection back then (or at least was aware of), and tried to capture the feel of that time. I still had the original 8-track cassette tape, so I was able to get the acapella, that sounded half way decent, even with the excessive effects.
