Jesus “suffered under Pontus Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried” (Apostles’ Creed). Pilate’s name lives in infamy as the placating government official who sent Jesus to the cross rather than risk a riot on his watch as governor of Palestine. Power and position often blind people to the true identity of Jesus. Pilate’s encounter with Jesus is a warning that no one can negotiate a settlement with the world about who Jesus is. And you cannot just wash your hands and walk away innocent. The life transforming question is: who do you say Jesus is?
