“John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand’” (Matthew 3:1-2). Martin Luther wrote the first of his famous 95 Theses that ignited the Reformation: “All of life is repentance.” The word “repent” literally means “to change one’s mind” or “to turn around.” To move forward in following Jesus requires us to keep turning back to him confessing our sins every day and believing the Good News that his life, death, and resurrection works forgiveness and new eternal life.
