The Optimistic Youth Reporters from Khayelitsha in Cape Town, recently attended a highly-sought after concert by the acclaimed Minnesota Orchestra in the city. The youth reporters mingled with celebrity guests and interviewed members of the orchestra about this historic tour to South Africa.
The Minnesota Orchestra was on a five-city tour of South Africa, marking the first visit to the country by a professional U.S. orchestra.
The tour was part of the worldwide celebration of Nelson Mandela's Centenary.
The concerts showcased music that derived from South African, American and European musical traditions, ranging from Beethoven’s Fifth and Ninth Symphonies to a world premiere by South African composer Bongani Ndodana-Breen which was written in tribute to Mandela.
