One of the few African-American students at Lawndale High, Jodie is the quintessential overachiever, pushed by her ambitious parents. She is constantly seeking involvement in extracurricular activities and finding other selling points for her college résumé even as she resents having to be "Queen of the Negroes" at school. Much of this drive is due to Jodie seeking to satisfy her parents' demanding expectations.
