Many of us think of restaurateurs as people who love to cook and, sometimes, people who don’t love school. But my guest today on Up in Your Business is quite the contraire. He is the highly educated, well-read owner of Community Bakery in Little Rock, Arkansas, Mr. Joe Fox.
Most people start a bakery to share their recipes and commune with others. But Mr. Fox started a bakery so he would have somewhere to buy and read the Sunday New York Times.
Community Bakery was founded in 1947 in Rose City of North Little Rock. It wasn’t until the 1980’s that Joe bought it, relocating it to Little Rock’s Main Street, promptly setting up a New York Times newsstand in his new coffee shop.
Hear this Harvard Business graduate tell his story and share his ideas on employee stock ownership, inclusive hiring practices, Empowerment Zone tax benefits, transitioning to solar power for his bakery ovens and, last, about his decision to retire and the process of on-boarding a new partner.
