Today on Up in Your Business, we’ll listen to my interview with Mr. Ernie Dumas, the unlikely country boy from small-town Arkansas, who became the associate editor of the Arkansas Gazette and one of Arkansas’s most prolific political experts.
Ernie has been covering Arkansas politics since 1960 and recently wrote a book; a political memoir called The Education of Ernie Dumas. An apt title not just for him, but his readers, too.
This chronological book begins with his youthful newspaper assignments and coverage of Orville Faubus and ends with Bill and Hillary Clinton. As Hank Kelley, a former UIYB guest says, “Reading this book is like peeking behind the curtain.” Some of the politician’s stories are outlandish, some sad, virtuous, and some downright criminal.
Listen to hear Ernie give his “one word description” of every Arkansas governor, from Faubus to Clinton, and hear him recount a hilarious story about Governor Winthrop Rockefeller and his famous drinking habit.
