Back, I dunno, in 1994. I was in a religion class at Kent State University. There was an old guy who would come in after me. He would walk down front and sit in class. He dressed young however, ball cap, baggy pants, t-shirts. He was an inspiration to me. I would say to myself when I am that age I want to dress as cool.
Later in my life I read an article about the Beastie Boys. I was always a fan but, the article explained, MCA was at an art museum in baggy pants, Timberland boots, etc. You know hip-hop but, he was in his mid-forties, an old guy. The article explained that we would see more people dressed cool as time went by. This has not been the case.
Now, I am in my mid-forties and dress in baggy pants, cool t-shirts, and suede Pumas. But, I feel like an outcast. The men my age don't wear any cool clothes and are far from cool. I won't stop dressing cool but, I would like to see some men my age stop conforming. Yeah, we are toned down but, do we have to be dorks or worse?
You can still find all those old school brands and band merchandise. You could go to the mall and maybe find a new brand that is 'dope.' Just stop being slugs. You work so get some fresh gear. Shit man, get a new NOFX hat to wear golfing or fishing. Buy a Brooklyn Projects or Primus shirt to mow the lawn in. Even if you are afraid of what people might think. Get a turntable and spin an old Tricky or Public Enemy wax. Do something besides die in line with the conformists. You used to skate? I did until I was 43 years old (shit, I was on my board about a year ago) now my knee and back are screwed. But, I wore a Dogtown shirt to the local grocery store and some kid said, right on, nice shirt! It made me feel not so dead as a polo shirt or my work uniform. You used to dj? Why don't you anymore. Find a place to spin some records. Why not? You are going to die soon. Get cool dude! And, don't forget to drive around with a microwave. Revolution!
