In September 2017 Newstalk was placed at the centre of a controversy when George Hook made remarks about rape victims and their culpability live on air during his primetime show. Hook's words ignited a national debate. The Dublin Rape Crisis Centre who campaign, provide support to and represent victims of sexual assault and rape reacted angrily to his remarks deeming them victim blaming. Dil Wickramasinghe hosted the longstanding New stalk programme "Global Village". She condemned her colleagues comments and would not present her show in protest at the stations handling of Hook.
Dil came to Ireland in 2000 and has carved out a career as a journalist and mental health activist. She spoke to DDR's current and we discussed victim blaming and rape, how her Newstalk show ended and her new podcast - "Sparking Change with Dil".
