‘ A Radio Owlsnest Special - The making of ‘In the Temple of the Muse’ - Episode 30 ‘
Let me take you back to 2008 when I released my second solo album ‘In the Temple of the Muse’. After the release of my first album ‘In the House of Stone and Light’ it took me a bloody long time - yes ages - to release my next opus… on my own independent record label ‘Ironingboard Records’. It occurred to me that it was well time to tell the ‘OwlHeads’ the story behind this rather homemade release. I still had some of the great musicians from the “House of Stone and Light” sessions involved with me … Jimmy Copley, Neil Taylor, Russell Broom, etc., and they helped make this album very special to me.
It was quite an introspective album; my life had been impacted by the deaths of my parents and some friends - a reckoning of mortality at that time. I was determined to make a record that reflected my emotional state during that period… that hopefully others could, and would relate to. Feel.
And in the process, some of the songs on the album were cut by major artists - including Robbie Williams, Elaine Page and Mickey Thomas. It proved to me that when you create something from experience and the wounded heart…. you are liable to connect - on a universal level.
So dear OwlHeads let me guide you personally - intimately - track by track - song by song - through this sophomore album.
I’ll try to relate the magic, as well as the struggles, that made this record come together.
Love
Martin
