26 April 2023: The second episode of the Dark Matter Podcast welcomes Kyzzhibek Batyrkanova, a trailblazer for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in STEM fields. Kyzzhibek is the Program Director of the Kyrgyz Space Program (KSP), a first-of-its-kind initiative in Central Asia that aims to empower girls and women to literally reach for the stars. She leads a passionate team working hard to launch Kyrgyzstan's first-ever satellite and pave the way for the development of the aerospace industry and STEM education in the country. Drawing on her TEDx presentation, Kyzzhibek shares her inspiring journey in this podcast: from studying economics and programming to leading a team of talented girls to assemble the country's first nanosatellite. There is something universally powerful about fighting for women’s emancipation by reclaiming fields of science from which they have been historically excluded. This episode of the Dark Matter Podcast is not only informative but also inspiring, as it showcases the power of determination in the face of structural and cultural gender discrimination. Kyzzhibek's story is a testament to the potential of young women and girls in STEM, and her message is one of hope and encouragement for anyone who dares to dream big.
Batyrkanova and her team lead education and awareness campaigns, as well as offer engineering courses and satellite-building bootcamps designed specifically for girls. By doing so, they hope to make a lasting impact and drive a positive change in attitudes toward gender roles and STEM education in Kyrgyzstan.
