Luke 7:11-17
The Widow of Nain
She was a widow
She lived in Nain, 25 miles from Capernaum
The only mention of Nain in the gospels
She had one son
Her only son died, probably that same day (Deut 21:23, Acts 5:5-10)
She was mourning
She was on the way to the cemetery to bury her son
She had a large crowd with her
No record that she solicited Jesus’ help
No record of Jesus raising the dead before now
Jesus Response to her need
Initiated the journey from Capernaum to Nain
Nain is 25 miles from Capernaum – a day’s journey
Travelled with a large crowd
Probably arrived at the village gate at noon
Saw the funeral procession as he approached the village gate
Saw the widow
His heart overflowed with compassion for her
Told her not to cry
Walk over and touched the coffin, the bearers’ stopped
Spoke to the dead young man
“Young man,” .. “I tell you, get up.” 15 Then the dead boy sat up and began to talk! And Jesus gave him back to his mother.
Jesus gave the young man now alive back to his mother
Special meetings took place at the village gate
2 Crowds Met
2 Sufferers Met
