I genuinely don’t know what my life would look like if Josh Irwin wasn’t in it. I think everybody has people like that and he’s one for me. We met in 1999 at a bible study, even though we’d been sitting next to each other in a community college classroom for a few months. We bonded over being new songwriters and a shared restlessness with life in Fort Worth, Texas, where we lived.
One night, which may have been November 1, 2002, in the parking lot of a movie theater, Josh and I decided mostly on a whim to ditch Texas and move to Nashville, Tennessee to chase our songwriting dreams (like you do). This was a SUDDEN decision and we left a few days later, on the 7th, with 1 truck, some mixtapes, suitcases, 2 guitars and a combined bank of about $300. Most of the people we knew figured we’d be back in a week or 2.
We each lasted about 6 or 7 years in Nashville and collected MANY wild stories over that time, which we dig into here.
These days Josh is married with 2 young red-headed boys of his own. We were happy to have his wife Amelia join us for our chat. She had a lot of stories to share as well. It was a FUN night (Josh’s birthday, actually).
Buckle up, this is a good conversation.
