Recorded from Salisbury, Maryland, 2021.
This snapshot was gathered in conjunction with the Maryland Voices initiative at Maryland Humanities, specifically to supplement the "Voices and Votes: Democracy in America" traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian's Museum on Main Street program. This collection, made up of stories of first-time voters between the ages of 18 and 24, showcases the experiences of young people as they wrestled with the 2020 presidential election, issues around social justice, the environment, immigration, and the pandemic. The full collection of stories is available at www.museumonmainstreet.org.
(00:01) My name's Amir Gawish. I am 22 years old. I go to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and I am a diehard Lakers fan.
(00:09) I did vote, yeah. And with everything going on, I had to vote through the mail so it was definitely a very different process and it wasn't what I was expecting. I kind of felt like standing in line waiting was part of the experience of voting in normal times.
(00:24) But just having to send in the ballot was a very satisfactory experience.
(00:32) I think it's our responsibility to go out and vote and make our voices heard, not just necessarily for us, but for the generations after us. Because we have a voice and that should be used.
