Recorded in Savannah, Missouri.
This snapshot was gathered in conjunction with the Museum on Main Street program at the Smithsonian Institution and its "Stories from Main Street" initiative. The project is intended to capture Americans' impressions and stories about their small-town and rural neighborhoods, waterways, personal experiences, and cultural traditions, and work histories.
What's your favorite memory of living in a small town?
Speaker 1: Neighbors get together and tell stories. And this one neighbor I got, they'd feed you a real big dinner, then the afternoon about two o'clock they'd feed you again. And then at the supper time in the evening they'd feed you another big meal.
Speaker 2: That sounds like good time. Did you-
Speaker 1: And I liked the smell of it.
Speaker 2: Yeah. Would you do work for them and they would come and do work for you?
Speaker 1: Yes, that's what happened.
