Description

Recorded in Cozad, Nebraska.

This snapshot was gathered in conjunction with the Museum on Main Street program at the Smithsonian Institution and its "Stories from Main Street" initiative. The project is intended to capture Americans' impressions and stories about their small-town and rural neighborhoods, waterways, personal experiences, cultural traditions, and work histories.

Talk about how you came to live in your town.

"I was born in Bakersfield, California, and I moved to Cozad, Nebraska when I was 10 years old to live with my dad. He was living in Cozad because he divorced my stepmom when I was four years old. I missed my dad, and nobody told me that my dad moved until about I was ... two years later, so I was like six.

My mom told me he left. I was a little mad at him, and didn't know why he left, because I was five years old. When I came to Cozad, Nebraska I was 10 years old. I was really happy, in a way, to come to Cozad because I hadn't seen my dad in six years, but I knew I was also going to miss my mom and my brother.

We arrived and the first thing we did next morning was to go to school, and sign in. I like living in Cozad. It was a little cold though. I also like the people here, because they are friendly. The first persons I met was my teachers and some of my friends I hang out with today. Things are good now."
