Description

Recorded in Cozad, Nebraska.

This snapshot was gathered in conjunction with the Museum on Main Street program at the Smithsonian Institution and its "Stories from Main Street" initiative. The project is intended to capture Americans' impressions and stories about their small-town and rural neighborhoods, waterways, personal experiences, cultural traditions, and work histories.

Talk about a memory you have of living in a small town.

"I always loved the opportunity to get to go to the farm when we lived in Albion. Whenever I got the chance when my dad went I would hop right up in the truck and go. The reason I love this is because I like how everything changed when we moved back to Lex. [inaudible 00:00:17] . . . he asked me, "Would you like to be in 4-H and show cows?" And of course, I popped up and said, "Yes." I loved this time so much because I bonded so much with the calves. I thought of them as my own pets.

But when I had to let them go to [inaudible 00:00:32] and it was hard. Even though there was some hard times, I will never forget the experience I had with calves and grandpa. It gave me good, quality time with grandpa, and also it allowed the time with calves. If I could turn back and do it again, I would in a heartbeat."
