The Peale is excited to share stories and photos by Daisy Brown, a native Baltimorean, who is working on a audio-diary project called, "Stoop Shoots." From a safe distance, Daisy is taking photos of people in East Baltimore on their stoops and in the surrounding neighborhood. She's also capturing black-and-white vignettes of street corners, parks, and sidewalks in East Baltimore.
"Stoop Shoots" is part of the Be Here: Baltimore storytelling program and a new way to discover the people and places of the city. To date, we have shared more than 1,500 stories online, at the Peale Center, and in Baltimore’s communities. Hear stories from around Baltimore and record your own on the Peale’s website or using the Free Be Here Stories App for iOS.
"Hi, I'm Daisy Brown, staff photographer at the Peale, and welcome to 'Stoop Shoots,' where once a week, I will feature photos and stories of residents of East Baltimore. Here you will learn stories about how they are dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic.
Say hi to Annabelle, or as she likes to say, 'Just call me Belle.' Belle is a fixture in her block, near Patterson Park, where I met her on my routine walks with my little CiCi, and we often say hi to each from across the street, exchange pleasantries.
I hadn’t been over there for a while, so I ran into her last week as she waved me over, and she said, 'You know I haven’t seen you in a minute.' And, I said, 'Yeah, I’ve been a little busy,' but she’s a vibrant, sassy young lady, who wears a turbin, cat eyeglasses, as you can see her with her socks and shoes with a dress—your typical Baltimore Han. She’s been in the neighborhood, I believe her daughter said since 1967 and, boy, does she have stories to tell. Unfortunately, because of the pandemic, she can’t come outside and sit on the bench with her neighbor because she is part of that high-risk group. But, boy, you can’t damper her spirts, and I look forward to seeing her again tomorrow.
Until next time, thank you for watching Stoop Shoots."
