The Peale is excited to share stories and photos by Daisy Brown, a native Baltimorean, who is working on a audio-diary project called, "Stoop Shoots." From a safe distance, Daisy is taking photos of people in East Baltimore on their stoops and in the surrounding neighborhood. She's also capturing black-and-white vignettes of street corners, parks, and sidewalks in East Baltimore. In this episode, Daisy talks about Melissa, a good soul who has found a way to help neighbors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Stoop Shoots" is part of the Be Here: Baltimore storytelling program is a new way to discover the people and places of the city. To date, we have shared more than 1,500 stories online, at the Peale Center, and in Baltimore’s communities. Hear stories from around Baltimore and record your own on the Peale’s website or using the Free Be Here Stories App for iOS.
Daisy: Hi, I'm Daisy Brown, staff photographer at the Peale, and welcome to "Stoop Shoots," where once a week, I will feature photos and stories of residents of East Baltimore. Here you will learn stories about how they are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Clara: Hi, this is Clara from Balitmore Community Fridge. And, right now we're working to pop up this fridge which will be right next to City Hall, at the Peale Center, and so, today we had a bunch of volunteers come out and help us how to empty the alleyway and make it look a lot nicer, get rid out all the dirt and all the weeds that were growing there, and just help beautify it because we're going to have some art around the fridge, and we're also going to have a little house around the fridge to keep it safe when it rains. And with the weather going on right now that we don't have any electricity issues with the that. And, so we actually came about with the help of "In Our Hearts," which is a collective in New York City that has been starting fridges, I think since February in New York, and they're idea came out of the fact that they had just gotten a fridge, I think off of Craiglist, and were hoping to store food to hand out during their weekly events. But, they couldn't get the fridge through the door, so they actually left it outside and made it this kind of communual fridge where people can drop off whatever extra food they have and take whatever they might need, especially since there's a lot of hardship right now going on with layoffs and things like that around COVID. And, so yeah, we're trying to bring the idea here to Baltimore. It's worked in a lot of other cities that "In Our Hearts" has worked with including Nashville and Albany and all these other amazing cities, and so we're hoping that with the community we can bring that to all the different neighborhoods in Baltimore here.
Daisy: Until next time, thank you for watch "Stoop Shoots."
