Humans are beings who worship. It is natural to who we are. We express praise, amazement, gratitude, and awe at things we consider "higher" than ourselves. Superbowl Sunday is a great example of this - we will automatically throw our hands up in amazement and praise when Stafford throws a TD to OBJ. (Let's go Rams!) We worship the superstars of our favorite sports. For me, because I married a Canadian, I prefer hockey to football. I am much more likely to praise Mitch Marner and Austin Matthews rather than Joe Burrow. I know I stand out in this, but it is true. Humans all across America will be worshipping Super Bowl Sunday.
For the Philippian church, what they worshipped changed them. They saw the beauty of Jesus and wanted to express their praise, amazement, gratitude, and awe to him. This new focus on Jesus and the good news that his victory over sin has changed everything. Every facet of their lives has been altered by Jesus. And this is what made this church community unique. The Philippian church gives us a clear picture: The church is not primarily a place where... or programs that... but a people who... are changed by the gospel.
