Let's take a step back from our 4-month series on spiritual disciplines and talk about why we are focusing on the disciplines in the first place. Why are we giving so much attention to the practices of prayer, scripture, simplicity, and generosity? The answer to this question lies in one of Jesus' most famous teachings in the Sermon on the Mount. In this magnificent sermon, Jesus gathers his disciples together and tells them that they are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. It is a call to be purified (to be holy), and a call to engage in the world in preservation and proclamation. This call will lead us into the spiritual disciplines.
