Hebrews 12 says we are in a race and the only way to compete is by keeping your eyes on Jesus. OK. How? That’s what the whole book is about, keeping our eyes on Jesus. The early part of the letter gives us 4 ways to keep our eyes on Jesus. Drop an Anchor. Use a compass. Refine your purpose. Develop a plan. Whether you are young or old, you need all four to stay the course and finish well. Doesn’t matter whether you are a school teacher, a student, a stay at home parent, a lawyer or real estate tycoon. You’ll need all four. Let’s talk about that anchor this weekend from Hebrews 1-2 - "paying closer attention to what we have heard lest we drift". The slow drift. I know about that. I’m a boater. No anchor, poorly set anchor, incorrectly placed anchor, wrong anchor and you are going to drift. The slow drift is painful to watch. The person drifting isn’t even aware of it. It’s subtle. You were doing fine as Paul said in Galatians 5. “You were running well. Who hindered you from obeying the truth?” In other words, who or what messed you up? In 1 Timothy 1 Paul says, “fight the good fight, keeping faith and a good conscience.” Or what? Or you will be like Hymemaeus and Alexander, both whom have "suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith”. Do you know how shipwrecks happen? Not knowing where the shoals are and not having a good anchoring system. I learned to set an anchor from a good, old crusty sea worthy boating friend. I was doing it all wrong. No wonder we drifted. Let’s talk anchors and Jesus and how to stop the slow drift.
