“Sooooooo he wants us to stack rocks and do what to our whats!?!?” That question had to be trending on whatever version of twitter the tribes of Israel used. At least that’s what I’d be asking. Why the bizarre rituals? Why the strange monuments? Why the stacking? Why the cosmetic surgery? Why all the divinely-prescribed weirdness in Joshua 4–5? Heck, while I’m writing, I’ll ask a bigger question: Why are we reading this narrative of weirdness at all? What does it have to do with our cute, normal little River communities on the beach or at Norris? Let’s get right into the weirdness of it all and, I hope, discover that God never wastes an ounce of weirdness. Not in the story of salvation; not in the story of Joshua; not in the story He’s writing in our lives today. This Sunday, let’s get weird!
