We love the law when it catches the thief, but not so much when its red lights demand we pull over. Paul tells us in Romans 13:1 [our text for Sunday] that we are to “be subject to the governing authorities.” Two words stand out: government and authority. Questions are prompted. Why should we submit to authority? What happens if I just ignore authority? What is the proper role of authority? Are there some limits to authority?
Our little Jesus community is learning how to love well in a culture of pain and hardship. Paul won’t let us off the hook, and we have to learn how to love our government. But it is not as simple and straightforward as it sounds. Let’s open up this can of worms.
