So you think you are a hot shot business owner? Teacher of the year? Coach of the century? Best parent ever? You got nothing on Nehemiah. Living during post war defeat and complete annihilation, Israel is in ruins and so are the people. Morale is low. It's 5th century BC. How do you rally the troops? I know. It takes one individual with a vision for his people to rebuild from the ruins. In 52 days they rebuild the wall around the city of Jerusalem. No modern day hotshot business CEO could pull that off against all the odds- no resources, people scattered, heavy opposition to name a few. And it's not about the wall. It's about arising and building a city, a community that honors God for the next generation. It's not about the wall it's about giving people a place to belong and become a part of something greater than themselves. It's about working together to become a place of refuge for the poor and the broken-hearted. A place for a new generation to rise up and be the people of God. Where does it all begin? Chapter 1 of Nehemiah says it starts with prayer. Not money. Not people. Not plans. This one principle would change every major organization across the world if they simply did it.
