Description

Dr. W Gruden writes in his systematic theology, “Because there is sin that still remains in our hearts even though we have become Christians (Rom. 6:12-13; I John 1:8), our sanctification (fancy work for spiritual growth) will never be completed in this life.” Yet, Peter says to us straight up, “Be holy in all your conduct.” (I Peter 1:15). And to add to this haunting task, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” (I Peter. 1:16). Well, there you go. Be holy because God is holy. Peter is quoting the Old Testament in Leviticus 11:44. The rest of the verse reminds us to not make ourselves unclean with any of the swarming things that swarm on the earth. Oh, that’s good. Stay away from slimy, swarming things and you’ll be good. Seriously, what is Peter telling us to do and is this even possible to be holy as God is holy?
