Today we are going to talk about cold calling companies to sell them services and products, so you can generate sales on the phone without having the need to learn marketing, sales.
This is something that most people and most companies do not have the balls to do it, because they want to develop this fancy marketing strategy from day one, instead of picking up the phone and doing what it takes without having a budget.
Marketers will gladly tell you that you need to have a fancy funnel, fancy Facebook ads and spend thousands of dollars even though you are just starting out to grow your business.
I can tell you that it is not necessarily the case. It certainly will help if you have the money for that, but if you are starting from zero, then cold calling is a very good place to start.
The first tip that I have for you today, if you are going to do cold calling in your business, is to research who you are actually calling. A lot of people just find a random phone number from any company and they call them and talk to the secretary.
What I used to do when I did cold calling for about four years is I went on the companies` websites and researched their structure. So when I called them I wasn`t completely clueless as to who to talk to.
If you end up talking to decision makers, then of course you need to know more about the company, you need to tell them something connected to their business.
You need to validate the fact that they would even buy something from you. If you can`t determine if they are going to buy from you, then you are wasting your time. You cannot read their minds, so you need to make a research by calling. In the beginning, what I generally comment, it is not to call to do sales, it is to call to make a market research.
You also need to get to know the people, to establish relationships with them, so spend hours for small companies, days for larger companies, weeks or months for really big companies to get to know them.
It is better to know these people personally, not just talk about business all the time, but also who this actual human being is. Because just befriending one of them, who has control, he knows everyone. He will connect you with anyone you know if you need that.
Do not settle on your first idea of what kind of companies you are going to call because you do not really know, you need to spread the net a little bit wider to find out what kind of people do you actually want to do business with.
Do not be afraid of changing directions while doing this research. You have to make these decisions early on while exploring the markets but once you find a good market, stick to it as much as possible. Later on it will be much harder to change things.
You are looking to make not hundreds but thousands phone calls. It sounds like a lot but keep in mind a lot of people don`t want even talk to you, so it is not thousands hours of phone calls, but thousands phone calls.
Eventually it is going to reach thousand of hours, but that is going to take many months. But you need thousands of phone calls to get results of cold calling. If you want to start a kind of company that has long term success, then follow the steps that I have given you.
Finally, you need to establish and find out when they will actually buy and they need to tell you when they are ready to invest the amount of money that you are looking for. You need to help the companies to determinate, weeks or months in advance, when they are going to have the money to invest in your venture.
Once you have all of that, they can contain you and close off the sale.
