This week, listen to Mia Lobel '97 in conversation with Sheila Tobias, Wesleyan's first female Provost. Sheila, who studied literature and history at Radcliffe College (Harvard), went on to get her MA in History and M. Phil from Columbia. She has also received numerous honorary doctorates. Sheila, renowned for her work as a scholar and feminist activist, came to Wesleyan in the 1970s, at a unique point in history.
Sheila ushered in the era of co-education: Wesleyan had just begun admitting female students, and for her eight years as Provost, Sheila oversaw the inclusion of women in student life and assisted in the hiring of female faculty. Sheila has covered an array of topics in her scholarship: from math anxiety to science education to military spending, Sheila has made a mark on many disciplines.
