And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath, from the day that ye brought the sheaf of the wave offering; seven sabbaths shall be complete: Even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days; and ye shall offer a new meat offering unto the LORD.
Leviticus 23:15-16
Shavuot is 50 days following the Festival of Firstfruits. It is also known as Pentecost. The Hebrew word and meaning for “sheaf” in the verse above is “omer”. Passover concludes with Shavuot, and the 49 day counting of the omer is what connects these two feasts. After you complete the counting of the omer to the 49th day, the next day is the celebration of Shavuot/Pentecost.
What does the counting of the omer represent to us spiritually as believers in Yeshua the Messiah? Counting the omer represents growing in spiritual maturity.
That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; but speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ. Ephesians 4:14-15
There has been a great controversy over the last 2,000 years regarding how to count the omer. There are several groups of people with different positions. These different groups disagree on when you start counting the omer. This teaching covers what each of the different positions are.
